Product Recommendations

  • All the McDonald's restaurants that I have been to so far provide free refills for soft drinks, although many of them do not advertise this fact. I'm not sure if this is a strict nationwide franchise policy or if this is voluntary on a store-to-store basis, but you can always try asking for a refill.
  • Always prefer to buy the Large Value Meals. It is only 75 sen more and you get quite a lot more fries compared to the Medium Value Meals. You can always offer to share your fries with your friends if you can't finish them (tell them *before* they order so they can cut down on their order accordingly). The size of the drink does not really matter as you do get free refills.
  • If you are taking away, consider choosing an item *not* on the menu. If you're lucky, the cashier will give you a small cup of Coca-Cola to drink while you wait. Note that this trick will probably work more often at the standalone restaurants than at the mall-contained ones.

Getting the Most Out of Your Food

  • "Treat" your burgers with pepper (obtainable at the condiments counter) or chilli sauce. Of course hardcore McDonald's fans eat the burger just as the food scientists over at the McDonald's laboratories designed it, but everyone's tastes are different. And I'm not a hardcore fan anyway...I'll gladly switch restaurants if another one comes close to McDonald's quality and affordability. :-)
  • One of my friends eat her fries with ketchup and sugar, proclaiming it nice because it makes her fries "crunchy". I have done that before and it made no difference to me, but maybe you should try it too. People have thought that it was a strange thing to do, but I found it an interesting practice.

Those Which Need a Bit of Work...

If you're willing to "go the extra mile", here are some tips...

  • If you have a sibling/cousin/child/friend who is 12 years old or younger, register for the JuniorCard which will give you a Small Fries for every purchase of RM3 and above. Right now there are burgers that are exactly RM3 (not counting tax) so RM3 (plus 5% government tax) will get you a burger and fries for you to eat.
  • You can also somehow try to obtain the GreenPrivilegeCard, which gives you 10% discount for anything you buy. However, they do not distribute it anymore so you'll probably have to ask your friends to lend it to you when you want to order. The GreenPrivilegeCard and the JuniorCard cannot be used simultaneously.

If You Want to Splurge

If you have a little bit of extra money and are fed up of eating the same thing over and over again, you could:

  • Buy a Chocolate SundaeCone (there are also Vanilla and Mixed flavours) for RM1 for small or RM1.50 for large. If there are more than one of you and some of you want the large cone, always send someone to buy the small first and the guy behind him, the large. This is a psychological trick to ensure that the large cone you buy is indeed large.
  • Buy a BigMac or QuarterPounderWithCheese meal instead. You spend 75 sen more, but you do get the extra beef (for the QP) or the wonderful BigMac sauce.
  • Buy a Sundae. This is RM2.50, so buy this sparingly.

Old Product Recommendations

This is just for posterity. These recommendations no longer apply because McDonald's has changed its pricing or because certain cards have been discontinued.
